'Lampard effect' sends sales of protective TV screen covers soaring

Landlords' fears about England penalty taking have boosted sales of protective TV screen covers for Midland manufacturer TOP-TEC. What is becoming known as the 'Lampard effect' has created a sudden rush in sales, which are up 700%, for the covers that protect plasma TV's from missiles thrown in disgust.

England's record in world cup penalty shoot outs is not the best and Lampard's recent misses in the FA cup and the world cup warm up against Japan does not bode well, both for England and big screens in pubs and clubs. Whilst it is difficult to know if Lampard's penalty misses and the increase in sales has a correlation, for the UK manufacturer it is a two-edge sword says TOP-TEC MD Clive Beardmore:

"Whilst this is great for business, as an England fan it is a worrying trend, but at least the fans can rest assured that the protective screen covers are manufactured in the UK. However, I hope that the covers will not be needed and England has a penalty free route to the final."

Made from 6mm Polycarbonate, the material is also used in riot shields, the protective screens are made to measure to ensure that remote control units still operate despite a metal frame. The ability to change channels being crucial for landlords who may be required to quickly change the mood of fans with something more depressing than an England penalty shoot out defeat, such as reports of Government cuts, MP's expenses or an episode of EastEnders.
