The Brief

As part of an innovative programme to assist the Trust to continue improving its Healthcare Commission assessment for the use of resources, North Bristol NHS Trust introduced a computer system to help doctors make better prescription decisions and ensure greater accuracy in their record keeping.

With some drugs costing hundreds of pounds and the potential threat of inaccurate records to lose hospitals tens of thousand of pounds every year, prescribing accuracy and security are paramount.

The introduction of an integrated computerised prescribing system has enormous benefits over the previous system. It allows doctors to access additional prescribing information and also ensures that the prescription data is accurate and legible. This enables the hospital to receive all the recharge costs due from central NHS funding.

North Bristol NHS Trust provides care at two large acute hospitals and at a variety of smaller locations. It has a broad range of specialities and its international reputation means that it receives referrals from all over the UK. With more than 9,000 staff on average, the Trust delivers over 5,800 babies annually, and cares for nearly 600,000 people as emergency, outpatients, inpatients and day patients.
