Dundee and Angus College – Creating a First-of-its-Kind Esports Studio for Scotland

Due to the huge growth and potential of Esports within UK education, Dundee and Angus College have heavily invested in their facilities to provide a dedicated base for their Esports courses and teams. The new course, which has been created in partnership with the University of West London, is the latest milestone in the Esports journey for Dundee and Angus, which has been going from strength to strength over the past 12 months.

The college is keen that potential students see that Esports is not just about playing games competitively, it is a multidisciplinary career where a range of skills are required to organise, manage, and participate.

Dundee & Angus College wanted to create an Esports studio that would give their students an immersive learning experience. The college reached out to us to help them make this idea become a reality.

Key Project Criteria:

  • Create an exciting Esports studio that provides students with an engaging and immersive learning experience.

  • The new space must have the ability to accommodate a wide range of Esports, competitions, games, and creative technology organisations.

  • D&A College branding must be implemented into the new space.

Decision Process

Following several meetings between TOP-TEC and the team at Dundee and Angus College, the college outlined their key project objectives and began collaborating with TOP-TEC’s in-house design team to find a suitable solution. Utilising our experience in designing, building, and installing multiple Esports spaces, the college was confident in our ability to meet their vision for the new space.

It was decided that our Nebula Esports Station would be the best suited due to its bench style and its specific design for Esports environment. These Esports desks also have a modular design, making it suitable for us to create a V-shaped tournament style dedicated teaching space for a more hands-on learning experience.

Let us do what we do best…

TOP-TEC offered 2D room layouts to help provide a conception of the arrangement and ensure maximum use of the space, alongside 3D product renders of the Nebula Esports gaming stations so that the college could begin to visualise how the Esports lab would look.

How did we help?

  • “Create an exciting Esports studio that provides students with an engaging and immersive learning experience”

TOP-TEC are committed to supporting colleges to create spaces that help enhance the student experience leading to improvements in student satisfaction and retention.

We supplied high quality RGB lighting within each desk to help with customisable lighting to respond to in-game events or actions, meaning players can feel more immersed in the gaming world, enhancing focus and concentration.

  • “The new space must have the ability to accommodate a wide range of Esports, competitions, games, and creative technology organisations”

Having installed a number of Esports spaces over the past 12 months, we recognise that Esports has different spaces for different purposes.

The college requested a “tournament” style set up and discussed a V-style arrangement for the classroom to create a competitive environment. This means that students can battle 5 v 5, head to head on tournament days whilst being live streamed and controlled from the adjoining room. This layout helped mirror professional Esports competitions and gives students a real-life competitive gaming experience.

At TOP-TEC, we consider AV and IT from the start, rather than as an afterthought. Our Esports desks are designed to seamlessly integrate AV and IT creating an easy-to-use all-in-one solution. TOP-TEC were able to collaborate with CDW to take all of the recommended AV equipment and integrate it into our Nebula Esports desks.

  • “D&A College branding must be implemented into the new space”

As an in house designer and manufacturer, we were able to tailor our Nebula workstations to include illuminated branding within the space featuring the college’s logo. This feature helped give that real “wow factor” on tournament days, for opposing teams and prospective students who were looking to join the course. Purple and Blue edge banding matches the D&A College logo to further enforce the brand within the new Esports space.

The Result

Since the launch of the Esports lab, we have received positive feedback from teachers and students confirming the area has become one of the college’s most popular teaching and learning spaces.

The college is delighted with how we were able to provide and tailor our solutions to meet their specific requirements. They are also excited to see the incredible opportunities this space will offer students, partners, and the gaming community as a whole.
